Haryana means "The Abode of God" and as such, has the third highest per capita income in the country. Haryana state was formed out of Punjab on 1st November 1966 with 54 legislative seats. It still shares its capital, Chandigarh, with Punjab and the Vidhan Bhawan building is shared by State Legislative Assemblies of both Haryana and Punjab. For the 2009 Assembly polls, Haryana has 90 Vidhansabha constituencies, of which 17 are reserved for the Scheduled Caste and Tribes. The largest political parties in Haryana are the Indian National Lok Dal, Haryana Janhit Congress, Bhartiya Janata Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and Indian National Congress.

Haryana Legislative Election Results:
Haryana was traditionally a fighting ground for Om Prakash Chautala led Indian National Lok Dal and the Indian National Congress. However, since 2004 Lok Sabha elections, Congress has been creating a stronghold in the state. 2004 saw Congress winning 9 of the 10 seats, with 1 going to BJP. Recently concluded Lok Sabha Elections saw Congress winning 9 seats with one going to Mr. Bhjanlal (Haryana Janhit Congress). You can take a detailed look at Haryana Election Results here. It's this feeling of optimism in Congress which led them to dissolve the current 2005 state assembly and declare elections a year early in Haryana.

The Haryana state elections have been favourable for the Congress with it winning 67 seats out of a total 90 in 2005. BJP with just 2 seats and main rivals INLD with just 9 could not even form the 2nd largest opposition, as that went to the others and independents who won 12 seats.
