Sugauli has decided to go against the popular choice from the start. When Bihar was electing Congress members, Sugauli chose CPM, when it went JD's way, Sugauli chose others, and in 2005 it chose RJD and then later BJP.

East Champaran had 12 constituencies in Bihar Assembly for 2005 Elections: Raxaul, Sugauli, Motihari, Adapur, Dhaka, Ghorasahan, Madhuban, Pipra, Kesariya, Harsidhi, Govindganj, Kateya. After the delimitation rule came into effect, East Champaran now has 13 Vidhansabha constituencies. The new ones are: Chiraia, Kalyanpur and Narkatiya.
