Katihar district in Bihar is spread over a 3,057 sq km area and is richly irrigated by the river Ganges and Mahananda.A few years abck, katihar had a big name because of its jute and paper mills, but over the past two decades or so, the industries have been closing fast here.

Katihar has a total population of about 18 lakh, off which 2.5 lakh belong to the SC/ST. Main agricultural product from the region is paddy.

After the delimitation rules came into effect, Barsoi constituency from Bihar 2005 elections has been removed and Balrampur has been added.
