The Central States of India
Central India refers to the central most region of India consisting of the states of Madhya Pradesh & the newly formed Chhattisgarh.
Madhya Pradesh, often called Heart of India, was originally the largest state in India until November 1, 2000 when the state of Chhattisgarh was carved out. It borders the states Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan. The state has an area of 308,252 km².
Chhattisgarh, which gained statehood on November 1, 2000, takes its name from 36 (Chattis is thirty-six in Hindi and Garh is Fort) princely states in this region from very old times.
All major rivers of India originate from one of the three main watersheds, one of which comes from the central India . They are:
- The Himalaya and the Karakoram ranges
- Vindhya and Satpura range in central India
- Sahyadri or Western Ghats in western India
