Andhra Pradesh, with 23 distrcits, has always seen a lot of political activity. Andhra Pradesh Elections have been a matter of utmost interest to many because of the Telangana poll issues and post poll alliances. From 1953 till 1983, Congress ruled the state without any interventions. A movement for a separate Telangana state did start in early 1969 by the Telangana Praja Samiti, but with the division of the party in late 1969, the movement faded away. The first challenge to Congress came in the year 1983, with the emergence of a popular telugu actor, N. T. Rama Rao. He formed the Telugu Desam Party, and within 9 months was elected to power. Since then, it has been a tussle between the Congress and the TDP. True to Andhra's political culture, there was a major breakup in NTR's party in 1994, when Chandrababu Naidu took control of leadership. A second Telangana movement, now going nowhere, was started in 2001 by Telangana Rashtra Samithi(TRS), which is now also a part of the ruling coalition.

On April 16th, Andhra Pradesh will see 13 of its 23 districts go to vote. The alliance between the TDP, TRS, CPI and CPM seems strong enough to challenge the upbeat Congress, which is fighting the elections almost alone. Superstar Chiranjeevi has also jumped in the election fray for the first time with his political party, Praja Rajyam, and it'd be good to see if it can make any impact on the results, especially in the Telangana region.

Polling Date for 42 Andhra Pradesh Constituencies are 16th & 23rd April '2009.
