Chhattisgarh was created in 2000 when 16 Chhattisgarhi speaking districts of Madhya Pradesh were united. Owing to the presence of various historical structures and several forts, Chhattisgarh is often referred to as the "princely state". As such, the princes and royal family has had a huge role to play in Chattisgarh elections, but 2009 will see more of "common" candidates as just 2 royal family candidates are in fray this year. The boycott of polls by naxalites of the area remains the biggest hindrance i conducting the polls peacefully, but the BSF forces are in position to tackle that and expect that voters will come out in huge numbers to vote.
Similar to its neighbour Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh has remained true to BJP. In the assemble elections, BJP won 50 out of 90 seats giving it a clear majority. In 2004 elections, BJP got 10 out of 11. Congress would be hoping to reverse the trend somehow in the Parliamentary election of 2009.
All Constituencies in Chhattisgarh go to poll on 16th April '2009.
