Gujarat was created as a state in 1960, and from its initial 17 districts, it has now moved on to having 26 districts. The Gujarat election 2009 will have 26 constituencies. After the new delimitation rules, some new constituencies have been created for this year's Gujarat Lok Sabha elections, such as Panchmahal, Bardoli, Valsad and Vadodara.
The major players in Lok Sabha polls for Gujarat constituencies are the Congress and the BJP. No other state seees such a direct conflict. The Gujarat elections have little role for the regional parties and the major vote share goes to either the Congress or the BJP. The BJP seems to hold a upper hand owing to the fact that the Narendra Modi led BJP state Government has won 3 consective state elections. But then, as we all know, there's a huge difference in the mindset of voters when they vote for a state assembly and a Parliamentary election. MJP is the only other party which can pose a slight challenge to either BJP or COngress in some parliamentary constituencies.
All 26 seats in Gujarat go to polls on 30th April '2009.
Gujarat Constituency Profile for 2009 Elections:
