With the financial capital of Mumbai, Maharashtra is a state in the western India. Maharashtra Elections generally see results based on pre-poll alliances. For the Parliamentary elections 2009, Congress has entered a pre-poll alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party(NCP) and the Republican Party of India(RPI), with Congress contesting on 26 seats and 22 going to NCP. BJP has again teamed up with it's past ally, the Shiv Sena, with BJP contesting on 26 seats and the Shiv Sena fighting on 22 seats. Many also believe the NCP chief, Sharad Pawar, to be a Prime Ministerial candidate this year and so it'd be pretty interesting to see how many seats NCP can get.
With the recent terror attacks on Mumbai and farmers still killing themselves over loan worries, Maharashtra General Elections will have a lot of answers waiting for the country.
Polling Date for 48 Parliamentary Constituencies of Maharashtra are 16th, 23rd and 30th April '2009.
Maharashtra Constituencies for 2009 Election:
With 48 Lok Sabha seats, Maharashtra is the second largest after Uttar Pradesh. As such, it holds considerable importance in the national politics too. Of the 48 Maharashtra Constituencies, 34 have been re-drawn and as much as 14 new constituencies have been created because of the new delimitation rules. 3 seats are reserved for the Scheduled castes and 2 for the Scheduled tribes. Past Results & Top Contenders from Maharashtra:
NCP was formed in 1999, and won just 6 seats. Congress came 3rd with 10 seats, BJP had 13 while top position went to Shiv Sena with 15 seats. In 2004, Congress and NCP formed an alliance, but the BSP cost them a lot of votes in the Vidarbha region. Sometimes past results can give an indication of the future, but a lot has changed in Maharashtra since the 2004 elections. Shiv Sena's long time loyalist Narayan Rane has now joined the Congress. Another Shiv Sainik, Raj Thackeray formed a new party MNS, which is fielding 12 candidates in 2009 Elections. With a tirade against north Indians, and talks of the Marathi "asmita" or pride, MNS is expected to make a dent in the votes for Shiv Sena as well as Congress. Also, the fact that BSP plans to field its candidates in all 48 constituencies, the race has now become harder to win for either Congress-NCP or BJP-Shiv Sena combine.
