Uttar Pradesh, one of the largest states in India, holds considerable importance for the Lok Sabha Elections 2009. Uttar Pradesh has a total of 80 Parliamentary constituencies of a total of 543 in India, and thus holds considerable power and weild on deciding the fate of the 15th Lok Sabha.
The major players in Lok Sabha polls for Uttar Pradesh constituencies are BSP, SP, Congress and the BJP. A new "secular" bloc, aligned neither to Congress nor the Third Front has been formed before the polls with RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav and LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan alligning with SP head Mulayam Singh Yadav. Considering the fact that SP got 35 of the total 80 seats in 2004 Parliamentary elections, this new alliance does hold the capability of influencing the outcome of 15th Lok Sabha.
BSP might face a tough time as the general consensus of Mayawati's two years rule in the state is that she has given more time creating statues, than looking after the basic necessities. Although being proclaimed by the party as a Prime Ministerial candidate, Mayawati might just find it a tough going. BJP and Congres are fighting a battle of revival, as for long both have been reduced as regular side players. BJP seems to be placed better this time because of it's seat sharing deal with Ajit Singh's Rashtriya Lok Dal in western UP and also because of the sympathy votes it might get owing to the Varun Gandhi issue.
Uttar Pradesh will have its polling dates spread across all the 5 phases of voting from April 16th to May 13th 2009.

2004 Results from Uttar Pradesh:
Power in Uttar Pradesh has shifted drastically in the last 2 decades. It went from being a stronghold of Congress, to being BJP's den during the Ram Mandir-Babri Masjid era, to moving towards SP and then BSP. 2004 saw the emergence of a strong Samajwadi Party, which bagged 35 seats. BJP will take heart from the fact that it was not too far behind the SP and BSP in terms of overall vote percentage, although it just won 10 seats in 2004 elections.
