Sania Mirza wins Lexington Challenger in Kentucky

Sania Mirza won the singles title at Lexington Challenger in Kentucky on 26th July 2009. Incidentally, this was Sania’s first tournament after a break, in which she also got engaged. Sania Mirza was down a break at 1-2 in the second set, but she powered home in her own style. She won the match 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 to make her richer by $50,000.

Sania is playing a mix of Challenger (ITF Circuit) and WTA events this season so that her singles rankings can improve. She is currently rankled 80th in the world and was seeded second for this tournament. Her opponent in the final match was Julie Coin, who’s ranked 63rd in the world and was seeded first for this tournament.

Sania Mirza will now be seen in action at the $75,000 Challenger event in Vancouver, which starts on August 3rd. She’d also play in Cincinnati and Toronto, before playing a $100,000 Challenger in Bronx, NY. Next in line will be the US Open.
