Rahul’s Nuclear Pact speech woman Kalavati to contest elections

Rahul Gandhi while delivering his speech on why India needs to sign up the Nuclear pact, mentioned a woman from the farmer-suicide hit belt of Yavatmal district. Her name was Kalavati Bandurkar, widow of farmer Parshuram Bandurkar, who committed suicide because of farming loans in December 2005. Kalavati has now decided to contest the 2009 Assembly polls from Wani in Yavatmal district.

After Rahul Gandhi’s visit to her house and subsequent mentions of her by Rahul Gandhi in the Parliament, Kalavati was soon turned in to a poster woman by the activists. She was given a grant of Rs 33 lakh by Sulabh Internatonal, international NGO Greenpeace projected her as an ambassador for alternate energy like solar power and Yuva, another NGO, took her to Delhi by plane to release a souvenir. Undoubtedly, kalavati has now become a high profile woman in her region.

Sharad Joshi, Leader of Swatantra Bharat Party (SBP), approached her with the offer to contest elections, which Kalavati readily agreed on. SBP will be contesting the polls on 60 seats for Maharashtra Assembly Polls and has an alliance with Vidarbha Janandolan Samiti, which is headed by farmer leader Kishore Tiwari. The Assembly seat is currently held by Shiv Sena and the Parliamentary seat is held by BJP. It’d be good to see whether Kalavati would be able to make her mark in this Shiv Sena-BJP stronghold…
