Indian audience is unpredictable. Ever so often the audience proves that they do not get swayed by reviews and big banners. Kurbaan released last friday and was expected to become the highest box office grosser for 2009, but it opened really bad at the Indian Box Office.
Kurbaan had everything going right for it. The critics showered praises on it, the movie had the hottest real-life couple of Saif-Kareena as lead pair, Saif Ali khan was always considered as a bankable star in solo-hero, especially after the last few hits like Hum Tum and Love Aaj Kal, movie was produced by Karan Johar, who rarely puts a foot wrong, as most of his movies under the banner of Dharma Productions are blockbusters. However, despite all this, Kurbaan took a beating at the Bollywood Box Office .
The first day for Kurbaan saw an occupancy of just about 55-60% at multiplexes and only 35-40% at single screens. Not much to support the hope that the movie can be a blockbuster. Bad news for Kurbaan is that De Dana Dhan releases on 27th Nov and can lead to a further decline in the audiences. Akshay Kumar-Sunil Shetty-Paresh Rawal have together always done well at the Box Office and if Kurbaan doesn’t pick it’s earnings this week, it’d not be easy for it to recover next week.
Meanwhile, Tum Mile just did good business for first three days and is on way to becoming a flop. Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani is still going strong and has earned 54 crore in just two weeks. It did suffer in its second week because of the unprecedented success of 2012. Following after Wanted and Love Aaj Kal, APKGK can still be the third highest grosser for 2009.
