Bhartiya Janata Party was always recognized by two of its most prominent leaders: Shri Atal behari Vajpayee and L.K.Advani. BJP came into being in 1980, with Atal Ji as its President. Advani took control of BJP for three terms, but with Advani now vacating the leader of opposition post, it’s the start of a new era for BJP with Sushma Swaraj and Nitin Gadkari.
Sushma Swaraj was chosen BJP’s Leader of opposition in the Parliament on Friday, 18th Dec. She becomes the first woman in BJP to hold the post. Sushma Swaraj is 57 years old, and is well known for feisty attitude and excellent powerful speeches.
On Saturday, Nitin Gadkari took over as BJP’s President from Rajnath Singh. Rajnath Singh’s tenure as BJP came to an end in Dec and as BJP did quite poorly in State Elections as well as National Elections under his leadership, it was pretty obvious that Rajnath Singh will have to vacate the post for someone else. Nitin Gadkhari was an obvious choice, as he has been Maharashtra unit chief, and has earned real good image from voters of his State because of some excellent infrastructure development work done by him in Pune region. Gadkari is 52 years of age and his immediate job will be to lead the resurgence of BJP as a national level political party.
82 Years old, Mr. Lal Krishan Advani has been the BJP President for three terms, 1986 to 1990, from 1992 to 1998 and 2004 to 2005. He was the official candidate for the Prime Minister’s post in the 2009 General Elections. But ever since the drubbing that BJP got in the elections, it was widely anticipated that he’d be leaving his post for some younger leaders.
Shri Vajpayee and Advani started BJP in 1980, and then turned in to a National level political party by early 1990’s. However, the time when Sushma Swaraj and Nitin Gadkari are getting the reins of BJP are tough. In the past few years, BJP has lost a lot of its sheen, there has been a lot on in fighting and factionalism, and its election results have been pathetic. It’d be important to see how Sushma-Gadkari combine takes BJP ahead in the coming days.
