India tested the Astra Missile twice from Orissa Coast. Astra is a short range air to air missile which has been indigenously developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation
The Astra missile was test fired from Integrated Test Range (ITR) off the Orissa coast. Astra is designed to intercept enemy aircraft at supersonic speeds in head-on mode at a range of 80 km and in a chase mode at 20 km. Astra will add to an ever-growing fleet of missiles in Indian Air Force. It will aid Sukhoi Su-30MKI, Mirage 2000H, Mirage 2000, MiG-29, MiG-21 Bison and Tejas combat jets and the Indian Navy’s Sea Harrier jump jets.
Astra resembles Matra Super 530 missile and it has been created on solid fuel propellant.
