The Jyoti (eternal flame) finally died. But not before removing the darkness around for 95 years. CPI-M leader and one of the most loved politicians in West Bengal, Jyoti Basu, passed away on Sunday morning at 11.47 a.m.
Jyoti da, as his was mostly called, was admitted to AMRI Hospital with pneumonia on January 1. By January 6, his condition deteriorated, and he was put on ventilator support. Late Saturday night he was put on a temporary pacemaker, and Doctors knew they were losing him. The inevitable finally happened on Sunday morning, when Jyoti Basu left us for his heavenly abode.
Jyoti Basu was the longest serving Chief Minister in the Indian history, from June 21, 1977 to November 6, 2000. He was even considered for the role of Prime Minister in 1996, as the consensus leader of United Front. He was the primary reasons behind CPI-M dominance in West Bengal politics for so long.
