India celebrates 61st Republic Day

India celebrated it’s 61st Republic Day on 26th Jan 2010. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh commenced the day’s ceremonies with paying homage and laying a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at the India Gate at 9.25 a.m.

The Chief Guest for the day was South Korean President Lee Myung-bak. The President, Pratibha Patil, commenced the parade by taking the salute. She also gave away the Ashok Chakra and Param Vir Chakra awards. 21 children were also given the bravery awards.

the day started amidst heavy fogs. Till about 11 a.m. the fog was really thick and heavy, making visibility hard. Jhakis or tableaux from 21 states were showcased during the event.

India showcased its military might to the world by bringing out some of the main battle tanks such as Arjun, AWACS, the Smerch Multiple Launch Rocket System, the Armoured Engineer Recce Vehicle, the Sarvatra Bridge, the Electronic Warfare System, Samyukta, ICV BMP-II Sarath, Ambulance Tracked and ALH Dhruv. Agni III which was recently test fired, was showcased as well.
