Mumbai monorail, India’s first monorail service, will have its first trial run in Mumbai on 26th Jan 2010. Chief Minister Ashok Chavan will be present at the test run of the monorail.

The Rs 2,460-crore project spanning a 19.54-km stretch is being made by a consortium led by Larsen & Toubro(L&T) with Scomi Engineering Bhd, Malaysia. The main idea behind the Mumbai monorail is to ease congestion in the highly crowded Jacob Circle, Wadala and Chembur areas.
The trial run will cover just about 108-metre stretch at Wadala. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) officials wanted to have the Mumbai monorail trial on a one-kilometer stretch, but the electrification required for the trial was complete only on 108 metres. The blue coloured coach arrived in india on January 13th and the first trial run will have Malaysian born S Ponnadurai as the driver. Ponnadurai has been driving monorails for the past 10 years.
