An objectionable picture of Jesus has been found in a school textbook being circulated in Meghalaya. The picture shows Jesus holding cigarette in one hand and a can of beer in the other.
Meghalaya is a state in North-east India and over 70% of its inhabitants are Christians. St Joseph’s School, a privately run school in Meghalaya, was found to be using a cursive writing book for students which showed the above mentioned picture of Jesus.
As soon as the news broke out, Govt got into action and confiscated over 120 books from the local distributor as well as the school. The book has been published in new Delhi by Skyline Publications and State Education Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has said that the State Govt is contemplating filing a case against the publishers. The publishers on their part have not come out with an official statement to the reason yet, but they have apologized for hurting the sentiments of Christians.
The Catholic Church in India has decided to ban all publications and textbooks coming out from the errant publisher, Skyline Publications.
