Millions of devotees took a holy dip in the river Ganges in Haridwar on the auspicious day of Maha Shivratri. This is the first ‘shahi-snan’ day for this years Maha Kumbh mela.
In Haridwar, amidst chants of ‘Bum Bum Bhole’ and praises of Lord Shiva, the naga sadhus marched towards Ganges. Several groups of naga sadhus had joined today in Haridwar to take the holy dip. The local authorities had assigned different time zones for the dips, and the first to take to water were the sadhus from Juna Akhara. 7 other sects of sadhus, including the Naga Sadhus, took the Holy dip as the day progressed. Some akharas have moved to Vrindavan to celebrate the day.
Next dates for the holy bath during the Haridwar Kumbh Mela are March 15 (Somvati Amavasya), March 16 (Nvasamvatsar), March 24 (Rama Navami), March 30 (Chaitra Purnima), April 14 (Mesh Sankranti) and April 28 (Baishakh Adimasaha Purnima).
