My Name is Khan going the Kurbaan Way

A movie based on the theme of terrorism, with the hottest pair of Bollywood in it , backed by the best Director and some cool music? Recipe for success? No, not really, if you consider the way Kurbaan earlier and now My Name is Khan is going forward.

My Name is Khan started good. With the controversy surrounding it, created thankfully by Shiv Sena, MNIK saw excellent opening across India. In most theaters, up to 90% opening was witnessed. Shah Rukh-Kajol-Karan Johar looked set for another big hit. It’s three-day earning figure from around the word were amazing, almost 90.2 crore. This made it the highest earner in first 3-days in the history of Indian Cinema.

However, the slump started from Monday. the occupancy fell drastically to about 50%. The movie got really good reviews from everyone, just like Kurbaan did. But, now, after four days of bad collections, movie analysts are pointing to the flaws. For one, the movie doesn’t seem to have the entertainment quotient. It’s too serious for a normal movie-goer to digest, and hence no mass appeal. Many feel, it’ll go down just as Kurbaan did, because the movie is far too serious than cinema goers can digest.

The theater owners are still optimistic though. They believe the collections will pick once more during the weekend time. Let’s see how it goes for the movie and Bollywood this weekend.
