Bandra-Worli Sealink, Mumbai, now fully functional

With the opening of 4 new lanes on the Bandra-Worli Sealink in Mumbai, the sealink is now fully functional.

Bandra sea link

In a function organized at the sealink, the four additional lanes of the sea link were inaugurated by chief minister of Maharasthra, Ashok Chavan and filmstar Amitabh Bachchan.

The sealink is now an 8-lane link and will greatly help in easing out the traffic in the region. The lanes were opened to general public at 9.30 p.m. on 24th March. A speedlimit of 50 Km/hr has been decided for the link, and estimated driving time from Bandra to Worli is 7 minutes. The toll plaza charges have been kept at Rs. 50 (one-way). The sealink will be further extended till Haji Ali in next four years, and will be built by a consortium of Reliance Infra and Hyundai at a cost of Rs. 4301 Crore.

The first phase for Bandra Worli sealink was opened in June 2009.

The opening ceremony came with its own share of political feud as Congress leaders showed tantrums on the presence of megastar Amitabh Bachchan in the opening ceremony. The actor was called for the inauguration by the State Govt, and then to raise questions on his presence, just because he has an affinity towards some other political party is just incredibly stupid. The Congress members should understand that the sealink does not belong to COngress or BJP, it belongs to Mumbai and India. Besides, Amitabh is not a political figure, he’s a person who represents Mumbai. Some Congress leaders do feel a pride in gaining publicity through these useless controversies, but they forget that Amitabh Bachchan is known worldwide and is a famous figure, while there Congress leaders like Ashok Chauhan are not even known outside Maharashtra.
