Bye Election in Tamil Nadu scheduled for 27th March

Bye Election for Pennagaram assembly constituency of Tamil Nadu is scheduled for 27th March. The counting of votes will occur on 30th March.

Pennagaram is a State Assembly Constituency of Tamil Nadu and falls under the Dharampuri district. The sitting MLA from this constituency died on 1st Dec 2009, leaving the seat vacant.

The election commission of India first issued notification on 26th Dec stating that the bye-election would be held on 20th Jan. However, because of opposition from various political parties, the election commission withdrew this on 28th Dec. The reason for opposition was that the Pongal festival and the Tamil New Year were falling in between the campaign periods. Finally, on 18th Feb, the EC announced the final schedule for the bye-elections.
