Supreme Court, in a major order on Monday, upheld the Delhi High court order which gave life imprisonment o Manu Sharma, supposed killer of Jessica Lal.
Jessica Lal was reportedly murdered by Manu Sharma on the night of April 29-30, 1999 at Qutub Colonnade or Tamarind Cafe restaurant. The restaurant was owned by a high profile socialite, Mrs Bina Ramani. Manu Sharma is the son of senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Vinod Sharma. With people belonging to the higher strata of the society involved in the case, public attention was natural.
In the midst of this, when in 2006, a trial court acquitted the accused, there was a huge public outcry. People came out on the streets supporting Jessica Lal’s family. The case moved on to the High Court, and Manu Sharma was convicted and granted a life sentence. He did apply in the Supreme Court against the order, but on Monday morning, the Supreme Court rejected the application and upheld the Delhi High Court’s decision.
This ruling does not only come as a wonderful news to the family of Jessica Lal, but it brings a smile to the faces of the common man as well. It’s not very often when the common man wins a battle in court against the high profile criminals. And to think that a trial court had let go of the accused, if it was not for the public outcry, the murdered would have been roaming free today. So, overall, it’s a victory of the People’s movement against injustice.
