May was supposed to do wonders for Bollywood and get people back to theaters, bringing in money for Bollywood, but it has not done as good as expected by many.
Bollywood was hit hard by IPL in March-April and then again by World Cup T20 in April end-May first week. But after the cricket mania was over, and just before Football World Cup fever starts, Bollywood sensed its opportunity to make good money. So movies were released by a dozen, some of the them with heavy expectations.
The first in the list of new movie releases was Housefull with Akshay Kumar in the lead. Despite being a movie which made no sense, had no story, Housefull has done some good business. But that’s all that Bollywood has to show for a hit in this month. All other releases have fallen flat. The big release of iron man 2 did not do much, and Darsheel’s Bumm Bumm Bole also failed to bring families to the theaters. Paathshaala and Badmaash Company, both staring Shahid Kapoor were big duds at Box office. But the biggest set back must have come from Hrithik Roshan’s Kites. The movie released amid huge expectations but it hugely disappointed. With 90% of the movie in English or Spanish, it just couldn’t connect with the Indian audience. recently released Prince of Persia is probably one of the best movies to come out in recent months, but with lack of proper publicity, the movie is not expected to do a lot of business in India.
With Football World Cup starting in June, chances are Bollywood see bad earnings in June as well. It however banks on two upcoming film releases which can change the fate of Box office. They are Rajneeti, starring Katrina Kaif and Raavan starring Abhishek Bachchan.
