3 Idiots works its charms at IIFA awards, Colombo

The Indian International Film Academy (IIFA) awards were announced in a glitzy awards function night in Colombo, Sri Lanka on Saturday night.

It was nominated in 12 of the 13 categories and won 8 of them. last month itself, results for the 14 technical awards were announced and the movie won 8 in those as well. The movie has been one of the highest grosser in the history of Indian cinema and has been appreciated by everyone.

The IIFA Awards has been dogged by controversy this year. The Tamil population in India has been opposing the awards location choice of Colombo. Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse’s efforts to end a 4-decade long civil war which ended when Prabhakaran was killed, has been widely in news because many believe that innocent lives of Tamil civilians were lost in it. Organizing the Awards night in Colombo seemed as an approval of Mahinda Rajapakse’s work. The South movie Industry boycotted the awards and also threatened that movies of all those actors who appear at the awards will not be shown in the Tamil regions. Already news reports suggest that hrithik’s movie Kites has been brought down in cinema halls in South India.

This was also the first time in 11 years that not even a single member from the Bachchan family were present at the awards. Amitabh Bachchan has been a known figure at all previous IIFA awards, and his families absence this year is very strange. Notable absentees also included Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and the Director of 3 Idiots.
