Two of the highly anticipated Bollywood movies ended up being the worst grossers this year. Both Raavan and Kites fared bad at the Indian boxoffice and the common producer, Reliance Big Pictures had to bear the burden over over Rs. 100 Crore loss.
Kites saw the return of Hrithik Roshan to the theaters after over two years. With Rakesh and Rajesh Roshan involved in the project, Kites was supposed to be another big blockbuster from Hrithik. But the movie opened to bad reviews. Being mostly in Spanish and English did not help the movies cause as well. Many felt the movie was made only to showcase Hrithik’s looks to the Hollywood producers and get him international recognition. However, with kites failing miserably across the globe, Hrithik will have to wait to make his mark.
Raavan, like Kites, had the best combination hat Bollywood can offer. A director like Mani Ratnam, with actors Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, was definitely a potent combination. But every single reviewer has mocked the movie, many comparing it to be as boring as Ram Gopal Verma’s Aag. Despite the good publicity, the movie saw a slow opening and things don’t look like improving in the second week.
BIG pictures lost about Rs. 60 Crore on Kites and is expected to lose aother 40-50 Crore on Raavan. Although, for a company as big as Reliance, this may be a small amount, it just might just deter them from producing big budget movies in the near future.
