Delhi 2010 Commonwealth games are scheduled from 3rd October 2010, but if you live in Delhi, you’d know pretty well, that the preparations are far far away from getting completed on time.
India was handed over the opportunity to host the 19th Commonwealth Games, but as usual, the bureaucracy reacted slowly to the preparations. Between the period of 2003 to 2008, Congress Govts at Delhi as well as center slept gleefully unawares of the time passing by. Then suddenly when just two years were left, Govt came into action. Stadiums started to be built, flyovers and road network to be improved across Delhi. But obviously, preparations for a tournament of such big magnitude can never be completed in two years.
Athletes generally get a home advantage because they are well aware of the local conditions and grounds. However, in our case, no home advantage will be awarded to the sports person. Reason? well, none of the stadiums are ready yet for practice. With barely 80 days left to the Games, one would have expected stadiums ready and running, with loads of sports persons practicing. However, in Delhi, leave aside the Commonwealth Games stadiums, even the roads and flyovers are still under construction. Except the Talkatora stadium and the recently inaugurated indoor Rugby stadium at Delhi university, none of the other stadiums have been launched yet. Even the Games Village is not completely ready yet.
Chief Minister Shiela Sixit has said that she is confident that everything will get ready in time, but has also acknowledged that since lot of nodal bodies are working together on this, delays have happened and a lot of work still needs to be completed. Chairman of the organizing committee and President of the IOA, Suresh Kalmadi says that te 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games will be the best games ever! However, the level of under-preparedness that one can see now, one can only fear the worst.
No doubt, Commonwealth games is a mega event and mistakes can happen, but if proper planning was implemented and a Politician-free organizing committee was made to handle the preparations, things would have been perfect by now.
We just hope these politicians do not make a mockery of India on the World stage as the Games will be viewed all over the world, and if the organizing committee and the Delhi Govt does not get its act straight, the Games will be a total disaster for us.
Let us know what you think about it, speak out India.
