So finally after all the controversies and the mis-management, Delhi Commonwealth Games 2010 finally kicked off from the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium in Delhi on 3rd Oct. A strong crowd presence of over 60000 was present to welcome the teams for The Games.
With the CWG games finally starting the focus will shift to the on-field activities for at least till the time when Games end on 14th Oct. After that, we all would expect that the guilt be brought to book.
The Games were declared open by Prince Charles in the presence of President Pratibha Patil. The opening ceremony mainly showcased the Indian culture with school kids performing. Thankfully no Bollywood act was made a part of the opening ceremony. The white helium-filled balloon, “Aerostat”, controversially worth 400-million-rupee, performed to the expectations. Raised 80 feet above the ground, the balloon was used for lighting effects as well as to show pictures of activities occurring on the ground.
In 17 sporting disciplines across 260 events, over 7000 athletes from 71 countries will take part in the 19th Commonwealth Games. Abhinav Bindra, the Olympic Gold medalist, lead the Indian contingent in the Games opening ceremony. India has 400 players and 210 officials taking part in the event and is aiming to take its medals tally to at least 100 medals.
