Blast in Varanasi during Ganga Aarti, 15 injured

Blast rocked the Hindu holy city of Varanasi in the evening of Dec 7th. The blast occurred during Ganga Aarti at the Dasashwamedh Ghat, 15 people are believed to have been injured.

Low intensity blast occurred at 6.20 p.m. Bomb was placed inside a milk can near the stairs. The Dasashwamedh ghat is located next to the Vishwanath temple. The blast took place during the evening Maha aarti ceremony. The injured have been taken to the district hospital. At least 7 foreigners are believed to have been injured in the bomb blast. No casualty have been reported yet.

Because of the blast there was a stampede, a railing was broken and some people got injured because of the stampede too.

Following the Varanasi blast, an alert has been issued across India. Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad have been put on high alert. There has been no confirmation yet on which group has taken the responsibility for the blast.

6th Dec was the day when Babri Masjid was demolished and as such, days near to 6th Dec are always considered sensitive. Most terrorist organizations try to disturb peace in India during this date. It can not be ascertained if the Varanasi blast was related to this.

Update at 8 p.m.

One year old girl has succumbed to her injuries. Her grand father had brought her along to watch the aarti.
Meanwhile, according to some news reports, one more bomb has been found inside a dustbin.

IM has taken responsibility for the blast in a mail sent to some news channel. Police are trying to trace the mail.
