Phase One of Assam Assembly Elections 2011 will be held today, 4th April (Monday). A total of 62 assembly constituencies will go to polls on this date. The polls will be held from 7 AM to 3 PM.

BJP finds itself in a really upbeat mood for the first phase. BJP had showcased almost all top leaders for the election campaigns in Assam. From former deputy prime minister L K Advani, party president Nitin Gadkari, leaders of Opposition in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley, former party chief M Venkaiah Naidu, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda every one came to the state for campaign. BJP even got shotgun Shatrughan, Hema Malini and Smriti Irani to bring in some glamour quotient.

Congress and AGP had a very simple and subtle campaign. Congress brought in Raj Babbar, while AGP campaigned with party president Chandramohan Patowary and former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta. CPI and CPI-M are contesting 17 seats and the campaigns were mainly held by Sitaram Yechury and Brinda karat.

Chief Minister Gogoi, assembly speaker Tanka Rai, deputy speaker Pranati Phukan, power minister Pradyut Bordoloi, BJP state unit president Ranjit Dutta are some of the candidates whose fate will be decided today.

Maximum number of candidates in the first phase are from Karimganj (South) in Barak Valley, with 25 candidates in fray, while the least 3 candidates are from Bokajan in Karbi Anglong district.
