North India jolted by 5.7 magnitude earthquake

At 5:01 PM, north India was jolted by an earthquake of 5.7 magnitude on Richter scale.

The quake had its epicenter at the Indo-Nepal border, about 12.5 km below the earth’s surface. The epicenter was 363 kms away from Delhi and just 130 Kms away from Haldwani in Uttar Pradesh. It rocked almost entire North India including Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Dehradun, Jaipur and New Delhi-NCR areas.

The Indian Meteorological Department has said that if the magnitude was around 7.4, it could have created a big havoc. High rise buildings with over 5 stories are especially prone to damage.

No loss of life or major damage has been reported so far.
