To hang or not to hang Rajiv Gandhi Killers

It has been 19 years since Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by LTTE, the President of India has rejected the mercy petition of three accused and they are to be hanged on Sep 9th in Vellore. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu’s main political rivals, DMK and AIADMK are already in a war of words to gain sympathy from the Tamil community.

On 12th Aug 2011, President of India rejected the mercy petition filed by Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan. All three have been given a death sentence and they are to be hanged on Sep 9th. The 4th accused, Nalini, who was also awarded a death sentence, was given a life term after Sonia Gandhi requested a clemency for her.

Of the three accused of assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, Murugan and Santhan are Lankan Tamils while Perarivalan is from India. With Tamil people’s sentiments involved in the case, both DMK and AIADMK are now trying to gain political mileage out of it. DMK is blaming AIADMK for not doing much to save the three, while Jayalalithaa is asking what powers does she have to save the lives? A fresh petition is expected to be filed in the Madras High Court requesting a review of President’s order.

Meanwhile, accused Murugan and Nalini’s daughter Harithra has requested to Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi and Jayalalithaa to save her father. Harithra has apparently uploaded a youtube video requesting for mercy.

With just 11 days left for the hanging, it’s anybody’s guess which way the verdict will go.
