Shiv Sena and BJP alliance have regained control of the BMC in Mumbai civic polls, the results for which were declared on Feb 18th.
Shiv Sena and BJP have control of BMC or the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation since 1996. Apart from BMC, they will also retain power in Thane Municipal Corporation with the help of independent candidates. MNS had quite a diminished and lackluster performance and maybe this will force Raj Thackreay to focus on actual issues in Mumbai rather than wasting time on North-Indian bashing. NCP-Congress managed to save some face in Pune with NCP emerging the single largest party there.
Shiv Sena-BJP alliance victory is being seen as a victory for Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray. But whatever the reason behind the victory, it comes as a huge setback for ruling Congress-NCP Govt. Congress decided to fight the polls with NCP this time to make sure they win a simple majority in BMC. This hope was based on the fact that during Maharashtra Assembly elections in 2009, Congress and NCP combined had gained majority with Congress gaining almost double the seats of Shiv Sena. However, Shiv Sena’s excellent performance in Mumbai civic polls may come as a warning for the ruling Congress-NCP Govt.
Seats | Congress + | Shiv Sena + | MNS | Others
Mumbai | 227/227 | 66 | 106 | 28 | 27 |
Seats | Congress | NCP | Shiv Sena | BJP | MNS | Others
Pune | 152/152 | 28 | 52 | 16 | 24 | 29 | 03 |
Thane | 130/130 | 18 | 34 | 53 | 08 | 07 | 10 |
Nagpur | 145/145 | 41 | 5 | 6 | 62 | 05 | 29 |
Nashik | 122/122 | 15 | 20 | 19 | 14 | 40 | 14 |
Congress would be hoping that these results do not affect their performance in Uttar Pradesh elections. The Assembly election results 2012 are to be declared on 6th March and we will bring you LIVE updates on the day starting at 7 AM.
