Another day, another blackout in India

India woke up to another major blackout on 31st July as almost 22 states suffered electricity failure caused due to errors in the Northern and Eastern grids.

The first power failure occurred on 30th July and took almost 14 hrs to power to be restored completely. But the very next day, an even worse blackout has hit the country with almost 22 states suffering from power crisis. Almost 600 million people are said to have suffered because of the blackout making it the biggest such incident in the world.

Late monsoons this year and extreme heat meant that electricity requirements were far more than normal. Farmers used more power for their crops while residential houses switched on their ACs and cooled off in the scorching heat. With rains playing a hide and seek game this year, power consumption recorded a new high. This could be the reason behind the Northern Grid and the Eastern Grid failing this year.

Train passengers suffered the most because of the power crisis. A lot of trains have either been cancelled or stopped at stations so that necessary amenities can be provided to the passengers. All six lines of Delhi Metro were stopped and passengers were evacuated from trains which stalled midway.

India has been used to paralysis in political system because of the dysfunctional UPA II, but this is the first time that they are experiencing paralysis in day to day life as well. At a moment when the Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde should have been resigning for his failures, Congress instead promoted him to the post of Home Minister of India, which was left vacant after P Chidambaram was made the Finance Minister.

There is a huge gap in power supply and actual demand in India and unless India gets a Govt which actually works for the people rather than using the office for scams and pleasing allies, nothing will change. Some SMSes also suggest that the power crisis is staged as the Govt did not want people across the nation to see the massive movement and support Anna Hazare is getting at Jantar Mantar!
