Tata's Nano Car launched on 23rd March '2009
Hailed as the people's car, and said to be the world's cheapest car, the Tata Nano was unveiled today, 23rd March 2009, by Mr. Ratan Tata, the Chairman of the Tata Group, at the Gymkhana Club in Mumbai. Ratan Tata maintained his promise of delivering the car at Rs. 1,00,000 base price ($ 2,000). Initially, a total of 1,00,000 cars will be delivered to the buyers through a lucky draw system. Applications for booking of the car would be available in 30,000 locations in 1,000 cities across India.
The ride to deliver Nano car has not been easy. The journey started almost 6 years ago, and although the cost factors hav changed a lot since then, Tata kept his promise of "deliviring an affordable, all weather transport at a price within the reach" as said by Mr. Ratan Tata while lauching Nano. It was first to come out from West Bengal's Singrur plant, but because of the opposition of politician Mamta Banerjee, the production for Nano was forced to move out of West Bengal and shift it's base in Gujarat. Surely lot of hard work must have gone into get the production happen so soon as everyone else was thinking that the first Nano car would be delivered only by Dec'09.
The initial booking amount for Nano is just Rs. 2,999. and once Nano gets allotted to you, the remaining amount can be paid through loans from State Bank of india, with a monthly EMI of just Rs. 2,000. The sale of application forms, priced at Rs. 300, will start from April 9th till April 25th. Within 60 days from then, the allotment will be done, and the delivery for first 1,00,000 cars will begin from July 2009.
Nano car is going to come out in three versions for now. It's named as Nano standard , deluxe and Premium versions. The base or standard version is the one promised by Mr. Ratan Tata, the one which will have the price tag of Rs. 1,00,000, and will have rexin seats and black bumpers. The two other models will have a higher price tag as they will have air conditioning (deluxe model), power brakes and power windows (premium model). With a maximum speed of 105 Kms/hr, and a fuel efficiency of nearly 26 Kms/lt, Tata Nano is sure to catch everyone's interest. The Indian Nano is powered by a 623cc, rear engine complying with BS II and III emission norms.
In India, the delivery of the first lot of Nano cars will begin in early-July. Tata plans to sell his car to the foreign market as well. The company has already unveiled the European version - Nano Europa - at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month . The Nano Europa is likely to be fitted with a more powerful engine than the Indian version which complies with Euro-V emission norms. It also plans to rach USA markets in just 3 yrs time.
