Varanasi or Benaras holds a very important place for followers of Hindu religion. It is one of the oldest living cities in this world and Hindus believe that dying in this city is close to achieving moksha. Holy river Ganga flows through the city and river Ganga ghats and Varanasi temples are heavily frequented by many.

Varanasi has a lot of Hindu temples and some of them are:

1. Kashi Vishwanath Temple: This is the main temple of Varanasi and is dedicated to the 12 jyotirlingas of India. According to legends, when Brhma, Vishnu and Shiv had a dispute on who was the greatest among them, Lord Shiva converted himself into a jyotirlinga, and Brahma or Vishnu could not find him. Hence, they accepted Lord Shiva as being superior to them.

2. Dashashwamedh Ghat: One of the most important ghats in varanasi, this is where Lord brhma is believed to have sacrificed 10 horses, and this is how it got its names. Tourists generally take a boat ride here in the early hours to worship the rising sun or watch the magnificent aart in the evening.

3. Sankatmochan Temple: Founded by Sant tulsidas, the temple is one of the most revered in Varanasi. On tuesdays, crowds throng the temple to pray to Hanumanji, the presiding deity, and offer garlands made of marigold flowers to the Lord.

Apart from the temples and ghats, you can also spend some valuable time shopping in Varanasi. It is quite famous for its banarsi saris, paan, brass pots, Mirzapur carpets, shawls and inlaid bangles.

Similar to several other cities in Uttar Pradesh, Varanasi has enough to offer you in terms of food. Some delicious Paapri chat, samosas, kachaui, rabri, jalebi and lassi await you in Varanasi.
